Choose the official import route
Jira Cloud’s administrator CSV importer supports field mapping and historical comments. Use the import path suited to your privileges and the documented format for the selected destination fields.
Preserve authors and dates
Atlassian’s comment guide uses External System Import for importing comment authors and timestamps. Prepare the required Summary and Project fields and use a separate Comment column per comment, with the documented date/account-ID/body format.
Review internal-note visibility first
Atlassian warns that mapping JSM comments to Comments body makes all imported comments public. Keep internal notes out of that mapping and establish a verified private-note route before the pilot. Inspect the result from an end-user account as well as an administrator view.
Retrieve attachments and map relationships
Attachment URLs must be accessible to Jira Cloud. Check the source-to-destination user and issue-key crosswalk, parent relationships, statuses and custom fields. Preserve a source copy before updates and agree on duplicate behavior and recovery steps.
Keep deployment editions explicit
This workflow is for Jira Cloud. Assess Data Center imports against the exact installed version and its official instructions. Include Confluence knowledge-base content, Assets and app-specific data as separate migration workstreams.
Separate new records from key-based updates
Atlassian’s administrator CSV import guide documents work-item-key matching for updates and saved field mappings. Preserve the import configuration and logs. Worklogs need the documented author/date/duration format, with duration in seconds; test a representative entry before a bulk load. Batch large files using the guide’s recommended sizing, and retain the existing private-comment warning when choosing the import route.
